Picture Quiz (part 2 in an apparently contunuing series)

Whats wrong with these pictures involving a major and a general?

scene from Adventures of Superman #629
Major Sanchez from Adventures of Superman #629
Script by Rucka, Pencils by Guedes

scene from The Witching #9
The general from The Witching #9
Script by Vankin, Pencils by Gallagher
NOTE: Dialogue slighlty censored to keep this blog family friendly
  • Same hint as the previous picture quiz.
  • “Lois Lane is wearing black in the desert” is a correct answer, but not exactly the point I was going for.

  1. Lois Lane doesn’t have D-cups?

  2. Lois left out “do” in the sentence “Do you have a moment?”?

  3. Major Sanchez has the wrong rank insignia on his shoulders.

  4. David has a point. If the creepy guy was refering to Lois then the artist needs a(nother?) brush up course on the female body. That aint no D-cup she be wearing. But then, said artist also had her wearing a tight black tank top in teh desert so any outbreaks of logic will quickly become obsolete when Lois collapses from heatstroke and one nasty sunburn.

  5. On a more serious note (though come on, a woman without D-cups in a superhero comic book? There is definitely something wrong!), both Sanchez and the General appear to have no insignia whatsoever.

On the other hand, any “General” worried about “*** witchfinders” may have only an honorary title. Or be involved in a black bag operation where insignia would be removed for “plausible deniability”. I don’t remember the specifics of the Superman issue, but I think a similar argument could be made for Sanchez. Or maybe a “No insignia in a war zone, so enemy snipers don’t know who to target”.

(Not that I don’t think for a moment that this is anything more than a lazy artist with little direction from the writer, SNAFU.)

(Acronym used to keep this blog family-friendly.)

  6. Both the Major and General are wearing rank insignia, just the wrong ones. The Major is wearing a the single gold bar of a Second Lieutenant instead of the gold oak leaf clusters he should be wearing. TheGgeneral seems to be wearing the eagle of a full Colonel instead of the star (or stars) he should be wearing.

In war zones, officers wear “subdued” rank insgnia instead of the normal bright metallic ones just for the reasons you mentioned, David. Silver insignia become flat black and gold insignia flat brown.

  7. It may be too much to ask of comic writers hastening to their next deadline to getmedical info right beyond avoiding truly gross errors, but this is a bit much. it’s pretty easy to look up almmost anywhere the correct insignia for a military officer.

  8. “Both the Major and General are wearing rank insignia, just the wrong ones.”

I can accept this interpretation because in the end I agree that it was an artist mistake, most likely due to artist laziness.

But looking at the picture of the Major, the colorist has made his “bar” the same color as his shirt. So it is no more than a fabric tab, not insignia. Similarly, the General *could* have an eagle on his shoulder, but it looks a heck (family friendly) of a lot more like a triangle, a little metal tab at the end of the cloth insignia holder to help with fraying. (Math, yes. Biology almost always. Insignia, sometimes. Haute Coture, not my bag.)

So really, it is just bad art all the way around.
