Anima Crackers

At the Treadmill, they’ve been snarking on about Courtney Mason, better known as Anima. I know it’s hard to believe, but some of us actually liked this comic (3 people at last count). It wasn’t an earth-shattering series, but it was an enjoyable read. One issue in particular did an excellent job of talking about HIV and AIDS (second only to Death Talks About Life in regards to mainstream comics dealing with the topic)
Anima was easily the best thing to come out of Bloodlines (but talk about being damned by faint praise).
UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that Hitman was the best thing to come out of Bloodlines, and I can’t really argue with that. Still, I’ll stick to my guns and say Anima was second best. Argus, Gunfire and the Psyba-Rats bear mentioning, but that’s it (the others aren’t even worth mentioning).

Not a big fan of Hitman, I take it?

Please elaborate. I’m one of the snarkers. I honestly tried to read several issues of the series and simply couldn’t get through them. That doesn’t happen to me very often. I’m willing to listen to anyone willing to plead their case, however. and as for Bloodlines, I’d second Loren’s Hitman and raise him Argus and the Psyba-rats before I’d even come close to Anima.
Was Gunfire a Bloodlines hero? His was a series that I liked, even though it never aspired to be much more than a standard superhero comic. The character’s background of dealing with the fallout of his father’s unethical business methods intrigued me at the time. Now, ask me if I’ve read it again since it stopped publishing — so while it interested me at the time, it didn’t stick enough for me to get the jones to re-read.

OK, I’ll cede Hitman was better than Anima. I had forgotten he was Bloodlines related.
Argus - never did anything for me.
Psyba-Rats - nahh.
Gunfire was Bloodlines, via Deathstroke: The Terminator I think.
Jim, I’ll post a good defense of Anima in the next few weeks, when I get a chance.

Hitman was so good, that it completely left its humble beginnings far behind and most people can’t fathom that it was once part of a mostly wretched company-wide crossover event.
And you can now number as 4 the ranks of Anima Admirers. I liked the concept, that is…the execution was atrocious. I’ve always hoped somebody would take a crack at the character, perhaps bring her into the Titans or something. That said, I still have my full run! Of course, I got about nine of them at the same time and read them in one sitting…

I had no idea that Hitman came out of a crossover event. It’s like when I hear that the Jack Knight version of Starman came out of Zero Hour. Damn! Talk about humble beginnings.

I thought Gunfire was sorta cool up until I saw Gunfire One Million in “Hitman” #1,000,000. It went something like:
*blam* “Ow! I just shot myself in the foot, someone get me a med kit” *blam* “Ow! I just turned the med kit into a gun and shot myself in the other foot!” …
… “I just turned my ass into a hand grenade!!!”
And then he explodes off-panel.
