Monday’s Guilty Pleasure: Nyssa

NyssaMy first teen-age crush was undoubtedly Nyssa from Doctor Who. Forget all the other pretenders: no Sarah Jane, no Liz, no Ace, no Leela, no Romana, no Teegan. Nyssa was far and away the best companion. Peter Davison was always my favorite Doctor, and Nyssa was probably a large part of that.

I managed to meet Sarah Sutton, the actress who played Nyssa, years later at a small science fiction convention in St. Louis during my junior year of college. She was one of the nicest actresses I’ve met. She was pleasant and humorous and she remained very pert and pretty.more Nyssa

I got an autographed photgraph from her that day. I t should be around here somewhere, but I haven’t seen it since the move. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen it since the Polite-Wife and I were married. Hmmmm. I haven’t seen my signed photos of Dana Delaney (in China Beach fatigues) or Claudia Christian since then either. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

  1. I always thought Nyssa seemed more level-headed, but then, considering that she was teamed up with Adric and Teegan, that’s not too surprising. Romana and Ace will always be first in my heart, though. (And you have no idea how pleased I am you didn’t bring up Peri…)

  2. Adric was always my least favorite. Somehow the concept of a math savant from a futuristic communist collective never translated into an interesting character. He edges out Peri because, frankly, she looks better in a bathing suit.

  3. Agreed, the most interesting thing Adric ever did was kill of the dinosaurs, and that wasn’t even directly his doing.

  4. My favorites were always the Lalla Ward Romana (cute, super-intelligent and enough attitude to keep things interesting) and Zoe (cute as a button genius from the future who can fill out a catsuit? Hells yeah.). I definitely see the appeal of Nyssa, though, but the princess dress-turned-pantsuit thing she was stuck in for so long looked kinda weird.

As far as I’m concerned, Adric’s greatest failing was that he didn’t take Tegan with him.
