Picture Quiz: Superman/Batman

Once a scene from Superman/Batman #35, now just grist for Scott's Picture Quiz

I note 4 fairly significant errors in these panels from Superman/Batman #35 (script by Verheiden/Guggenheim, art by “Pat Lee”). How many can you find? More importantly, how many additional errors can you find that I missed?

I’ll post my answers around 1PM central time. Answers below:

Hint #1: I count one error in the art, two in the script, and error #4 could be blamed on either.
Hint #2: Check out the anatomy of the hindbrain.
My Answers:
1. No horizontal slice of the brain will show both the lateral ventricles and the eyes; they’re on different levels, and
2. neither of them (nor Batman’s finger) are anywhere near the Medulla Oblongota,
3. which is part of the hindbrain, not the forebrain.
4. and all this means Batman was wrong about Superman’s drawing being any good.

  1. First thing that comes to mind is that Batman is not pointing anywhere near the medulla oblongata. Also, I don’t see any cybernetics…

(Are Metallo’s eyes supposed to be grossly different sizes? The second panel kind of looks like they are but maybe Batman’s just twisting it.)

  2. Isn’t it the cerebellum (the bit not pictured, and definitely not the forebrain) which regulates stuff like your heart beating?

  3. How are we supposed to know what looks damaged and what doesn’t? This is an “anatomy textbook quality” drawing at best. Who’s the supposed artist?

  4. Hmm… i don’t have an anatomy book handy but [Okay actually i do, i’m just too lazy to flip through it right now :)] is the human [or android] brain really that pointy in the front as drawn in the second panel? also: what cybernetics? theres just wiggly brain outlines[and a center divison that stops and starts rather strangely]. Plus the eye sockets look really wonky in the second panel. and should there be a few more, ah, layers around the brain? [mind you i think second panel is easier to pick on as its bigger.]
also second panel- whats with batmans left hand? the middle section of his index finger is too short, the tip too rounded, like someone cut it off.
and how can you draw an “mri-quality” picture? arent mris all computerized and show nifty coloured bits? I could prolly draw you a better picture of a brain-section. [not necissarily accurate but better none the less. :P] i dont think the second panel pcture is twisted. held at an angle with a slight crumple near the top border where the nasal bones should be, but not twisted. though the first panel shows some marks thatlook like wrinkles, so probably made when whoever doodled it, doodled it.
and thats my two bits. I’ll stop abusing your postie box now :D

  5. Is whats wrong that Superman apparantly keeps reams of parchment around for sketching on?

  6. As Chuk pointed out, finger is nowhere near the medulla oblongata . If Batman ever rabbit punches someone there, he is going to be off, by about 90-95 degrees. lol

Shouldn’t he have a right and left brain. I know the corpus callosum connects the left and right hemispheres, but something is connecting the brain, in an inappropriate area.

Forebrain? Shouldn’t they be referred to as the frontal lobes?

I don’t see any cerebral fluid or ventricles.

    Where are the sinuses?

  7. There may not be a horizontal cross-section that shows both the eyes and the lateral ventricles, but it could be an OBLIQUE slice. Superman’s X-Ray vision isn’t constrained by the same physical limitations of an MRI unit.

Of course, that would just make the shape of Metallo’s head that much stranger. And all the other points are still valid. But… doesn’t have to be horizontal.
