Moday PSA: We Can Stop the Enemies of Youth
August 27th, 2007
This dark and moody anti-dope PSA comes from the late-1951 and early-1952 editions of some Lev Gleason comics. It sports art by a young Frank Frazetta.
You’ll notice that they’re not too clear on what dope is, just that it’s really bad — as are dope peddlers and dope fiends (who are apparently contagious). Thankfully the comic book industry took steps like this to protect America’s youth! |

Wow. I do keep having the thought that the thumbnail image you used would look really neat as a gigantic Lichtenstein-esque painting.
The variety of things that Frazetta did still astound me.

According to the image, DOPE seems to be beheaded little yellow rubber-duckies.
BERT had better keep an eye out for any listless behaviour from ERNIE.

Does anyone else see the creepy, distorted face in the hair of that guy in the thumbnail?

Perhaps Mr. Frazetta was high on dope when he did the art.
Dopehead!

Poor Billy Batson…
So, are his “true friends and companions” the ones were like, “Look, he’s addicted to drugs and is miserable now! Let’s ostracize him and pretend he doesn’t exist.”
