Monday PSA: You Can Be An Engineer!

You Can Be An Engineer! Click for the full page. This straight-forward Spider-Man PSA comes from the The Amazing Spider-Man: Riot at Robotworld comic. It’s a simple message: “Anybody — including you — can be an engineer. Here are the classes you’ll need and here are some addresses you can write for more information.”

I particularly like the part where Ana says “You’ll need to take lots of English so you can learn to communicate clearly,” because that doesn’t sound like any of the engineers I know. They’re all very enthusiastic about explaining their ideas, just not particularly clear or concise.

  1. I like it too, although I prefer the line about social studies - a lot of the nerds I know (including me) could really use that! The science classes may sound a bit scary though - maybe they should have toned it down a little, saying that you should pick something you can really be enthusiastic about but not forget about the basics.
Of course, I must applaud having an engineer girl with -almost- my name explain those things as well!

    ;)

  2. As an interesting aside, when I got my engineering degree a “Technical Communications” course was required with the specific intent of giving students instructions on how and how not to present possibly complex technical information to an audience that may not be as expert in a given topic. (Yeah, the dos and don’ts of PowerPoint was mentioned.)

    It was a good class.

  3. Bah! When the robots rise up in revolt, they aren’t going to go for the theater majors first. :D

  4. Other than the higher maths, all of these were REQUIRED courses in the high school I went to anyway. They might as well just, “If you want to be an engineer, go to school and study hard.”

  5. That’s the scariest PSA I’ve ever seen (lol)….. PHYSICS……not the “easy” physics taught to premed, dental, vet, etc. but the university/engineering physics. My engineering friends say that’s the class that makes or breaks a student who’s majoring in Engineering. I needed the “easy” physics to fulfill my chemistry minor. The first part was ok(I got an “A”; worked my b…. off for it), but the second part was the hardest “B” I’ve ever gotten.

  6. Cheryl,

Physics was definitely a tough engineering class, but in all honesty I think I took at least one make it or break it class a semester.

I agree with mike on this one, might as well say, “hey kids!! Want to be an engineer? Study hard, work hard, and get used to your friends having fun, because you’ll be doing homework!!!”
