January 15th, 2007
How would you like to earn $70 or more each week? Well now you can with this amazing 10-week home study course! Free swag too (including a “Simplified Nurses Dictionary” — which sounds a little condescending to me)!

From The Young Doctors #3 (Charlton, July 1963). Technically not a public service advertisement, but it gives a nice picture of the history of nursing (or at least this one aspect of it), so it’s close enough to count.

My mom was a nurse (graduated in 1943 and served in WW2, where she met my dad when they were stationed on the same hospital ship). She always got mad at young nurses who wouldn’t wear their caps. Glad the woman in the ad has her head on straight.

Our nurse started laughing and offered two free lessons.

I sent the ad to my mom, who informed me that in 1955 she was making $1.12/hr as a registered nurse. She thought it sounded like a good deal.
As an aside, my mother spent the last years of her career as the nurse in a county jail. I told her that she’d make a wonderful hostage some day…

I’ve set this as my desktop at work where I’m a triage LVN, and it’s cracking up a lot of the staff. I’m pretty sure I make that $70.00 before my coffee break in the morning. When I graduated from Nursing school in the service in 1981, we had a big controversy whether we’d have to wear the damned caps — fortunately, we did Not. (I still think it’d clashed with the Army green uniform).
