It’s nice of Dr. Mann father to wipe down Yorick’s arm with alcohol to prevent infection — right before he injects him with a lethal dose of barbituates.

I’m sure using an alcohol wipe before an injection is simply a habit for the doctor, but it still strikes me as humorous that he’s being conscientious enough to worry about possible infection in a man he’s about to kill.

  1. What’s the procedure with real-world lethal injections?

  2. As far as I know, they use the alchohol wipe before real-life lethal injections as well, because while it is just and fair to kill a man, it is cruel and unusual to negligently expose him to infection.

  3. The lethal injection protocols I was able to find online all state “two IVs are started” without being specific as to whether or not disinfection is required. I assume standard IV Starter Kits are used which contain alcohol wipes, so they are available and are likely used.

Which still strikes my as morbidly humorous, though Steven raises a good point. And the Govenor could always call at the last minute — after the IV is in place — and grant a pardon or reprieve.
