  1. Do you enjoy Civil War? I have to say, I hate the series, and I hate the idea. I’m interested in hearing an opposing viewpoint, though, and I really enjoy reading your blog.

  2. I think the underlying idea of the series — a superpowers registration act — has definite potential. Marvel has been flirting with it for years in the X-Men and Alan Moore pulled it off well in Watchmen. There’s certainly more to explored there, particularly in light of today’s political climate.

That being said, the series is not living up to it’s potential, in fact it’s quite far from it and I just can’t buy (figuratively and literally) the way all the characters are behaving.

  3. I have two main problems with Civil War. The first is that it seems like the writers are spending too much time trying to shoehorn their allegory about the erosion of civil liberties into the story. I have no problem with the writers using allegory in their story (in fact I enjoy it), but it seems like they are to busy focusing on it to make the underlying story coherent.

My other problem with Civil War is it seems that what the superpowers registration act actually entails morphs from writer to writer. At times it seems like anyone performing super heroic vigilante action is required to register regardless of whether he or she possesses powers. This iteration of the law would require Hawkeye (if he was alive) to register as an active superhero, but not Jessica Jones, who has powers but does not engage in super heroics. Other times it seems like everyone with superpowers is required to register regardless of whether or not they engage in super heroics. This version would require Jessica Jones to register, but not Hawkeye.

Since Who’s side are you on? is the tagline, I would like to know how the law reads so I can make an informed choice. :)

  4. The whole storyline is a ripoff of the Iliad. Seriously. Read it again if you don’t believe me.
