PSA Monday: The Key to Success
I figured I’d showcase a work related PSA today as it’s Labor Day (in the U.S. at least).
Taking a break from his own title, Buzzy and his pal Wolfie swing by several other DC comics in this PSA from November, 1954 (Adventure #206, Detective Comics #213, and Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #2).
Like last week, this PSA was written by Jack Schiff, though the art this time is handled by Win Mortimer.
Discussion Questions:
1. Was it a really good idea for Mr. Green to hire a kid named “Wolfie” in the first place?
2. What will this do to Wolfie and Buzzy’s friendship?
3. Did Mrs. Brown really order the sugar, or is she just taking advantage of Buzzy’s helpful nature?
4. Do you think Mr. Green filed the proper tax forms, or is he planning on paying Buzzy and Wolfie “under the table”?

I believe this whole comic has been taken out of context. Here’s how I see it:
Monday: Having arrived early, Wolfie is supervising Buzzy because he already learned how to organize bags.
Tuesday: The reason Wolfie is tired and Buzzy isn’t is because Wolfie has been working hard all day while Buzzy has been doing nothing (notice that he’s only offered to do the delivery because it’s on his way home!)
Wednesday: Buzzy is going back to get sugar for Mrs. Brown because he knows that he frequently forgets things and probably forgot the sugar. He is also eager to waste time in an attempt to run out the clock. Wolfie is reacting to a pushy customer (notice her language) that had already wasted his time. He realizes that he can’t be late for the other customers just because one lady forgot to order sugar. Wolfie plans to deliver the sugar early the next morning while he makes all the deliveries Buzzy didn’t do.
Thursday: Buzzy is refilling a shelf that he knocked over. In the background, Wolfie is reviewing the store finances, looking for ways to save the company money.
Saturday: Unfortunately, the storeowner has taken advantage of Wolfie. Hopefully Wolfie can find somewhere to work where they appreciate his go-getter attitude.

Eventually, these two would get married, and from their union emerged Goofus and Gallant. Who, incidentally, carved the Timbertoes.

Wolfie is clearly disabled, having suffered some kind of trauma to the head that has bent it out of shape. He also seems to have vision problems.
Buzzy is either naive or a suck-up, or possibly just speeding out of his head the whole time (hence the obviously drugs related nickname). Of course the boss man is going to prefer him when he does free overtime. Note how he suggests that he intends to extend Buzzy’s responsibilities but says nothing about paying him any more. It’s quite possible that Buzzy is responsible for Wolfie’s firing, as the manager realises that Buzzy will cheerfully take up the slack for free.
What’s more disturbing is the question of the “forgetful” packer. Could it be the penny pinching manager leaving out items deliberately but still charging for them and setting up the delivery boys to take the fall if the loss is discovered? The whole setup is deeply suspicious, and Wolfie is well off out of it.
